Why Is My Chicken Losing So Many Feathers?
You walk into the run and find feathers everywhere.
Did something happen overnight—or is your chicken just getting a new wardrobe?
🪶 It could be a normal molt
Molting is the process of shedding old feathers and growing replacements. Adult hens commonly molt as the days shorten, and egg production often slows at the same time.
🔎 Look at the whole bird
Feather loss alone doesn’t tell you the cause. Notice whether your chicken is eating, drinking, and behaving normally.
🐔 Don’t assume every bare patch is molting
Pecking, parasites, and other problems can also cause feather loss. Injured skin, persistent scratching, or bullying warrant a closer look.
🥣 Keep care consistent
Provide an appropriate complete feed, clean water, and a comfortable environment. Don’t assume extra treats or supplements will solve unexplained feather loss.
If a bird seems unwell or the cause isn’t clear, ask a poultry veterinarian or your local Extension office for guidance.
Over to you
Have you had a hen go through a dramatic molt? How different did she look once her feathers grew back?
